What you eat and drink: sugar, acid and your teeth

You do not have to give up your favorites. It helps to know what really makes teeth work harder.

1

Sugar feeds the bacteria, acid does the damage

Bacteria turn sugar into acid. Foods and drinks that are themselves acidic, such as soda, sports drinks, citrus and wine, can also soften enamel directly. Both matter.

2

Little and often is the problem

A dessert after a meal is gentler than sipping a sugary drink for three hours. Each sip restarts the acid clock, and saliva never gets time to recover.

3

Easy swaps

  • Drink water between meals; keep sweet drinks for mealtimes.
  • Use a straw for acidic drinks to limit contact.
  • Rinse with water after something acidic rather than brushing right away. Wait about 30 minutes to brush.
  • End a meal with cheese or sugar-free gum.
4

Sticky and starchy foods

Dried fruit, crackers, chips and chewy candy cling to teeth. They are fine now and then, especially followed by water and a good clean later.
