Lower-cost care: dental schools, community clinics and sliding scales

If cost is what keeps you from the dentist, you have more options than you might think.

1

Dental schools and hygiene programs

Students treat patients under the close supervision of licensed faculty. Fees are often lower. The trade-off is time: visits tend to be longer and there may be a waiting list.

2

Community health centers

Federally qualified health centers and many nonprofit or free clinics offer dental care, often with fees that depend on your income. Services and wait times vary by location.

3

Public programs

Children can often get dental coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Adult dental benefits under Medicaid vary widely by state. Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental care, although some Medicare Advantage plans do.

4

Questions to ask when you call

  • Do you offer reduced fees or a sliding scale, and how is it decided?
  • What paperwork should I bring?
  • Will the same provider treat me each time?
  • How long is the wait for a first appointment?
5

Other things that help

Ask about payment plans, prepay discounts and splitting treatment across two plan years. Using a health savings or flexible spending account can reduce the effective cost.
